Uber’s Commitment to Electric Vehicles: The Launch of Go-Get Zero 2024

Uber has recently chosen the iconic Science Museum in London to unveil the 2024 edition of its annual climate initiative, Go-Get Zero. This event highlights Uber’s dedication to electrifying its fleet and introduces innovative ways to encourage riders to choose electric vehicles (EVs). As part of their presentation, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi shared exciting updates about the company’s autonomous ride-hailing projects and emphasized that Uber drivers are adopting electric vehicles at a pace five times faster than the average driver worldwide.

Growth of EV Adoption on Uber’s Platform

Four years ago, when Uber launched its ambitious climate goals and the Uber Green initiative, only 10,000 drivers on the platform operated electric vehicles. Today, that number has skyrocketed to 182,000 globally, with more than half a billion zero-emission trips completed across Europe alone. Despite the slower global adoption of EVs, Uber sees itself as a pivotal player in promoting electric vehicle usage, noting that many EV owners first experienced electric cars through Uber rides.

Uber Green Transitions to Electric-Only

Starting today, Uber Green will exclusively feature electric vehicles in over 40 markets worldwide, including major cities in France, Australia, and the USA. To make the transition to sustainable travel easier and more enticing, Uber has implemented several changes in its app designed to encourage both riders and drivers to opt for electric options.

Changes Designed to Encourage EV Usage

  • EV Preference Setting: Uber has introduced an EV Preference feature allowing users to automatically match with nearby electric vehicles. This setting minimizes the effort required to choose between standard rides and electric options, which often have similar wait times. If the wait for an electric ride is deemed too long, the app will select the nearest UberX instead.
  • Exclusive Premium EV Options: Uber’s new EV Pop-ups program will offer users the chance to select premium electric vehicles during specific timeframes. In London, for instance, users can ride in a Lotus Eletre, while in cities like LA, Miami, and Dallas, they’ll have access to the Rivian R1. However, this premium option is only available from October 14 to 21.
  • Real-time CO2 Savings Tracker: The app will feature fresh design elements, including a themed timeline during wait times that resembles ivy, symbolizing growth. More importantly, users will soon have access to their carbon savings, which accumulate over time and are visible directly on the app’s home screen. This feature encompasses reductions made through Uber’s eBikes, scooters, and ride-sharing programs. During the Go-Get Zero event, a rider in London who saves the most emissions by the end of November will win ten years of free Uber rides.
  • Expanding Uber Green Fleet: To support drivers switching to electric vehicles, Uber is enhancing the driver experience within its app. An AI assistant will provide answers to questions about EV ownership, and reluctant buyers will be connected with experienced “EV Mentors”—drivers who have already made the transition. There will also be significant subsidies and incentives, such as discounts on purchasing new EVs and free chargers for UK drivers through a partnership with Octopus Energy.
  • BYD: The Preferred Electric Vehicle Maker: Uber is partnering with BYD to increase the availability of more affordable electric vehicles for its drivers, thereby accelerating the growth of the Uber Green initiative. However, details regarding collaboration in the USA remain undisclosed due to existing import tax barriers on Chinese-made EVs.

Conclusion: A Greener Future with Uber

Uber’s commitment to a greener future reflects the company’s significant strides toward promoting electric vehicles within its network. With initiatives like Go-Get Zero and the new features in the Uber app, users are encouraged to embrace sustainability and make a positive environmental impact. As the company continues to innovate and expand its electric offerings, it positions itself as a leader in the transition to electric mobility, paving the way for a more sustainable future in transportation.
