Apple’s Future Device Innovations: A Shift Towards In-House Components

Apple has always aimed to maintain tight control over every aspect of its devices. The tech giant frequently asserts that its ability to manage both hardware and software permits the development of features that competitors simply cannot replicate. This trend is set to expand even further in 2025, according to a recent report.

New Insights from DigiTimes

A report from DigiTimes reveals exciting developments for Apple aficionados. The iPhone SE 4, anticipated in the first half of 2025, is expected to feature a 5G modem manufactured by Apple itself. However, it’s worth noting that the mmWave component of this modem will likely still be produced by Qualcomm. Following this, it is predicted that certain models in the iPhone 17 series may adopt similar in-house technology later that year.

But that’s not all—new iPads are also on the horizon. DigiTimes suggests that these devices might be equipped with Apple’s own Wi-Fi chip, though there is speculation that it could also debut with the iPhone 18 series in 2026.

Cost Savings and Consumer Benefits

Why is Apple pursuing this strategy? One primary reason is cost efficiency. By producing its own components, Apple can circumvent licensing fees paid to companies like Qualcomm, which currently supply many of the chips used in Apple devices. The company has been actively trying to reduce its reliance on Qualcomm for some time now.

Additionally, there might be consumer advantages linked to these developments. The introduction of its own Wi-Fi chip could pave the way for Apple to relaunch a line of routers, reminiscent of the AirPort series it once sold. Although Apple discontinued the AirPort router in 2018 and ceased releasing related products since 2013, the notion of reviving this product category raises some eyebrows.

What Lies Ahead?

With Apple’s revenue increasingly coming from digital services such as Apple Music and flagship products like the iPhone 16, one must wonder whether the company is genuinely interested in re-entering a product segment that historically underperformed in sales. Only time will tell if this strategy will materialize into tangible products.

Ultimately, by enhancing control over its supply chain and producing more components in-house, Apple ensures it can better plan and integrate features into its devices. This approach may be sufficient motivation for the company as it strives to innovate continuously.
